ACL Tear: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

An ACL tear is a common injury affecting athletes and individuals involved in activities requiring sudden changes in movement. This injury occurs when the anterior cruciate ligament is partially or completely torn, causing severe pain and knee instability

Causes of ACL Tears

  • Sudden stopping during running or activity.
  • Jumping and landing incorrectly.
  • Twisting the knee while the foot is fixed on the ground.
  • Direct impact to the knee during sports like football.
  • Weak leg muscles and poor muscular coordination.

Symptoms of an ACL Tear

  • Sudden and severe pain: Occurs immediately upon injury and restricts movement.
  • Rapid knee swelling: Typically develops within hours.
  • Popping sound at the time of injury: A distinctive sign of a ligament tear.
  • Knee instability: A sensation of weakness or the joint giving way while walking.
  • Limited range of motion: Difficulty in fully bending or straightening the knee.

Treatment for ACL Tears

Treatment depends on the severity of the injury:

Non-Surgical Treatment:

  • Rest and applying ice to reduce swelling.
  • Therapeutic exercises to improve range of motion and strengthen muscles.
  • Physical therapy to rehabilitate the knee.

Surgical Treatment:

  • For complete tears or significant knee instability, ACL reconstruction surgery is performed.
  • The damaged ligament is replaced with tissue taken from the patient or a donor.

Recovery Time for an ACL Tear

  • Conservative treatment: Recovery may take 6 to 12 weeks to regain normal movement.
  • After surgery: Rehabilitation requires 6 to 9 months of intensive exercises to restore strength and flexibility.

How to Prevent ACL Injuries

  • Engage in exercises that strengthen the thigh and leg muscles to improve knee stability.
  • Learn proper techniques for jumping and landing.
  • Avoid sudden movements during sports activities.
  • Wear appropriate footwear and use high-quality sports equipment.
